Fighting the GRAND Fight: Resignation, Resourcefulness, Resilience and Requirements of Grandparents raising their Grandchildren in Eastern Newfoundland

Grandparents Raising their Grandchildren (GRG) have specific needs and characteristics, which often align with foster parents but are also unique to this group of caregivers. GRG is a global phenomenon which is gaining increased attention because it seems to be on the increase everywhere for a variety of reasons. Join us to discuss what those reasons are, which of them are more applicable here in NL, and what resources are available to address the particular needs of “grandfamilies”. We will discuss what more can be done, and how grandparents and other kinship caregivers can become involved in the process. We will also draw on recent research to discuss how Child and Youth Care Practitioners are especially suited to support and encourage stability of grandfamilies, so children can have the most positive and nurturing experience while remaining in biological family units. Expect to be inspired and challenged as we consider the work being done as well as the consequences of not adequately supporting this group of caregivers.

Healthy Relationships

Healthy relationships are so important for us throughout our lifespan, for overall health and resilience. It is imperative that we support children and youth to identify and engage in healthy relationships. This session will explore strategies we can use to help young people develop and maintain healthy connections with their peers and others; as well as helping them identify red flags and how to implement boundaries when necessary.

Building Your Trauma Informed Toolbox

Being in the life space of children and youth who have experienced adversity provides a unique opportunity to help them enhance their coping and begin to heal from their traumatic experiences. This session is designed to help equip caregivers with everyday intervention strategies to use when helping children and youth self-regulate. We will also introduce some language when talking to children and youth about how they cope with big emotions in their bodies and mind.
